do supplements expire

Hot Take: your supplements are useless without this 5 minute fix

A pink nusosei weekly pill organiser open on a bedside table at night next to a glass of water and supplement bottle with a warm sunrise alarm clock glowing in the background.

The one thing making your supplements is not the supplements themselves, not the brands you chose, not the dosage, the bioavailability, or whether you went for magnesium glycinate over magnesium oxide.

The thing making your supplements useless is simpler than any of that which is not taking them.

The inconvenient truth about taking supplements

The supplement industry is very good at telling you what to supplements to buy, provide you with the research, the ingredients, the certifications, the before and afters feedback.

The one thing that is not advertised on the label is how to create a supplement routine and the importance of this habit ensuring you take them routinely.

Think about the last time you noticed your supplements working, not in a dramatic overnight transformation kind of way but just a gradual and quiet shift. You start sleeping better, have more energy throughout the day and getting through the week without hitting a wall at 3pm on Thursday afternoon. That is what consistent supplementation actually feels like, a slow accumulation of days where you showed up for yourself and your body quietly did the rest.

It is okay to miss a day but miss a week just because the routine slipped will mean that your levels  will start dip. Miss a month because life got busy and the bottles got buried, then you are starting from scratch. The research you did, the money you spent, the careful choices between liposomal this and third-party tested that, it will only return if you actually take them, every day.

Motivation is not a system

This is where most supplement routines quietly fall apart. Every Sunday brings high motivation into Monday morning.  The supplement bottles are lined up, the willpower and intentions are right at the front, ready to nail the routine. By Wednesday the routine has shifted slightly and by Friday something got in the way. By the following Tuesday you cannot remember whether you took them yesterday or the day before , so you skip or take extra, just in case and by the end of the week the whole thing has quietly dissolved.

Sound familiar?

It is not a discipline, motivation or willpower problem because it is a friction problem.

The research on habit formation is clear on this. Habits do not form through effort alone, they form through friction removal. The easier a behaviour is to perform, the more likely it becomes automatic and the more small decisions required to execute it, the more likely it is to be skipped.

Most supplement routines require too many decisions every single day such as which bottle is which, whether this one needs to be taken with food, whether that one was already taken, whether there is time before leaving the house to take them. Each decision is small but together they are enough to make skipping feel easier than starting.

Remove the multiple decisions and the behaviour changes completely.

The five minute fix

Pick a Sunday evening and put everything you need on the counter, open a seven day organiser such as nusosei, fill each compartment day by day with exactly what you need for that day. It takes less time than making a coffee.

Then put it somewhere visible such as the kitchen counter, the bedside table, next to the kettle, in your work bag ready for when you leave the house or somewhere you will see it every morning without having to think about where it is.

From Monday through Sunday there is nothing to decide as the decision was already made and the friction is gone so the routine runs itself.

Your supplements are only as good as the habit behind them and the habit is only as good as the system that supports it. Get the system right and the rest takes care of itself,  consistently, cumulatively, and in ways that actually compound into the results you bought the supplements for in the first place.
